Goat packing and carting are two wonderful activities any goat enthusiast can participate in with their goats. We first got interested in these activities because we had 2 wethers who we thought would be fantastic at packing and carting due to their curiosity and love of exploration. We did a lot of research on the internet and found some great information to get started with, the one thing we were a bit disappointed with was that most of the packing and carting pages were geared toward only standard sized goats. Since we keep dwarf goats we decided to trudge on with packing and cart training even though there wasn't much information about smaller sized goats participating in these activities.
We are excited to report that our wethers Tambourine and Fiddle are excellent packers and are quickly learning how to team drive a wagon. Training is done in short increments, it takes time to desensitize the goats to the equipment that is used. Lots of positive reinforcement and treats are necessary. We also took the goats on walks without equipment at first to get them halter, collar and leash trained and also to get them used to the different sites and sounds they could run into while on the trail or pulling a cart.
This page will chronicle Tambourine and Fiddle's training from the very beginning, it was also cover Patches and Oreo who we will begin training soon too. Check back soon for more updates, photos and insight from the packing and carting trail!
