Kidding
on the farm is a very exciting time! You never can be quite sure
what the new kids will look like and how many each doe will have,
along with that - watching the kids grow and develop is such a
joy. We breed all of our does so they kid either in the spring,
summer or fall so we don't have to worry about the kids getting too
cold during our sometimes harsh Virginia winters. We are very hands
on with our kids, while they are dam raised we spend considerable
time playing with them, holding them and getting them used to
humans. Our kids are usually very friendly and well adjusted by the
time they are weaned and will make wonderful pets and milkers in
their new homes. We accept reservations for kids only after
pregnancy has been confirmed by blood test. We do not require a
deposit on a kid until after the doe has freshened and the kids have
been posted below at which time a 50% non-refundable deposit is
required to hold you kid pick. Please see the sales page for more
information on reserving a kid and other policies regarding kid
sales.
We worm our does the day they kid and start the kids on a coccidia prevention program, we disbud kids when it is appropriate for them, we do each kid on a case by case basis evaluating the horn bud every day until it is of the correct size and shape for disbudding. All kids born on the farm are disbudded, there are no exceptions, horns are too dangerous to leave on a goat. All kids receive age appropriate vaccines and are fully weaned before they leave for their new homes. Male kids who will be going as neutered wethers are castrated by the burdizzo prior to leaving the farm, we wait to neuter as long as possible for optimal urethra growth to help prevent urinary calculi in the future. Please see our management and herd health page for more information on these practices along with what vaccines the kids recieve.
Here is the 2011 kidding schedule, as pregnancies are confirmed reservations will be accepted, we will update this page with photos of the does as they progress through their pregnancies along with photos and information about the kids when they arrive!
