Nigerian Dwarf Dairy goats are an African descended breed that are gaining in popularity throughout the United States. These beautiful goats come in an unlimited arrangement of colors from common black and white to just about any color combination you can imagine, they also can have stunning ice blue or cocoa brown eyes. Nigerian Dwarfs are everything you can get from a standard sized dairy goat in a smaller package, their conformation, their udders, and their temperaments are all miniature versions of their regular counterparts.
Nigerian Dwarf goats can provide a surprising amount of milk for their small size and are an excellent choice for the hobby farm or family dairy since they consume less feed and take up less space than larger breeds. Just like standard sized milking goats Nigerian Dwarf goats can be registered with the American Goat Society and the American Dairy Goat Association. Nigerian Dwarf goats can be comfortably housed in a small paddock with adequate browse or constant supplemental hay available, milking does should have access to grain and all goats should have free choice minerals and fresh water. They enjoy having items to climb on like picnic tables or benches, benches are recommended inside their barns to sleep on, they much prefer sleeping off the ground if given a choice.
Unlike the European descended breeds, these goats cycle year
round and can be bred during all 4 seasons which is advantageous to
the family looking for milk year round, by staggering breeding milk
can be available whenever it is needed. A doe can have 1-6 kids at
each kidding but twins and triplets are most common. They are
excellent, attentive mothers and usually can provide sufficient milk
for their kids and for their families 3-4 weeks after freshening.
