Ezra, the original bunny who started it all.
At Imagination Acres the Rabbitry is where our dream of living in the country came from. Our first step in rabbits took place on April Fools Day in 2002 when we adopted a shelter bunny named Ezra. An American Sable mix of some sort, Ezra opened the doors into the wonderful world of pet bunnies, he taught us so much about rabbits and it was a very sad day when he passed away in 2008, we dedicate our rabbitry to his loving memory.
Imagiantion Rabbitry is registered with the American Rabbit Breeders Association as Suburban Bunnies Rabbitry # A285. Prior to moving out to the countryside we raised rabbits in the suburbs of Washington DC and registered our rabbitry name accordingly, as of yet we have not re-registered our name. Suburban Bunnies is an important part of our history, we started out with English Angoras in 2007 and quickly added Belgian Hares. Rhinelanders joined the herd in 2008 at the National Convention in Louisville, KY. We then added the beautiful Creme D'Argent breed at the 2011 Convention in Indianapolis. At this time we no longer raise English Angoras or Belgian Hares - our focus is currently on our beloved Rhinelanders and our new additions - the Cremes.
Rhinelanders and Creme D'Argents are listed on the American Livestock Breeds Conservancy Priority List and are also part of the 2010 Rare Breed Rabbit List.
Rhinelanders
are a full arched breed, they are a running breed and
race up and down the table when they are shown. Rhinelanders have
striking white fur with flashy orange and black markings much like a
calico cat. They are an active and curious breed that excel in
athletic activities, many of ours do rabbit hopping - the bunny
equivalent of dog agility. We breed our Rhinelanders in the ARBA
recognized black variety and are also working with
the newly recognized blue variety that has passed
three COD
presentations at ARBA Conventions. Lorena Ferchaud in California of
Rough and Ready Rhinelanders
is the COD holder that successfully presented the blue variety to
acceptance by the standards committee, we are so proud of her
accomplishment and are excited to continue to develop our blue and
black variety Rhinelanders.
Creme D'Argent is an elegant commercial
breed of rabbit that is multipurpose; they excel on the show table,
in meat production, fur use and even as docile pets. Creme D'Argents
are born a bright orange color at birth and as they age their coat
silvers with white hairs turning them a pretty shade of cream -
their namesake.
Our breeding program is focused primarily on health, followed by temperament, type, color and markings. We do our best to provide our bunnies with a healthy environment including ample living space in their cages and appropriate exercise opportunities outside their cages. We feed them a nutritious balanced diet including unlimited grass hay, measured amounts of Purina brand pellets and healthy supplements such as greens or herbs from the garden, oats, barley and sunflower seeds.
See our herd health and management page for more information on how we care for our rabbits.
We breed throughout the year and generally have stock for sale to qualified homes. We work hard to promote these wonderful rabbit breeds and encourage fellow exhibitors and hobby farmers to consider adding Rhinelanders and Creme D'Argents to their programs. Preference is given to fellow breeders and exhibitors looking for stock although we are happy to place bunnies in select pet homes.
